JPEGView is an extremely lightweight image display application that features a minimalistic interface. It's designed to start extremely quickly, which means the software presents you with very little other than the picture that you're currently displaying.

Since it uses only the most basic graphics processing calls, JPEGView is ideal for lower-end machines. Naturally, it should run with incredible speed on modern hardware. Installation is as easy as copying over a few files, and it's possible to completely replace the underlying system image viewer with JPEGView. Operating system integration features make it possible to rely solely on it for almost any kind of image viewing task users may run into.

Several editing tools come packed with JPEGView, though these aren't as sophisticated as what you might find in most paint programs. They allow you to adjust the size and color balance of pictures as well as their contrast. If you have a number of photos that are oversaturated, then it's easy enough to use JPEGView to correct them. There's no support for massive batch editing jobs, but this usually shouldn't be an issue for most people who need a picture viewing package like this.

Rotation controls are probably the most important of these editing features to most users. JPEGView allows users to rotate an image an unlimited number of times before they save it to a new file. The app always prompts users before they do anything that could overwrite a previously saved file, so most people won't experience any annoying data loss.

Since JPEGView supports a dizzying array of different image formats, it might very well prove more flexible than the system software that comes with Microsoft Windows. As the name suggests, standard JPEG and JPG files are supported out of the box. Users can also display bitmap and PNG images without any difficulty. TGA and GIF files round out the selection, though JPEGView can also show many types of TIFF documents.

It can be hard to figure out exactly what kind of format is stored as a TIFF document, thus making it slightly unclear as to whether or not JPEGView will open a given file. Nine times out of ten, though, most users shouldn't have any difficulties.

Most impressive is the fact that the software supports WebP pictures, which are stored in a format considerably newer than most of the other ones on this list. Bundled support for this format should help developers in particular, since these files are becoming very common on the web. Since it's one of the more efficient in terms of file size, WebP might also become popular with users of mobile network connections.

Those who need an all-purpose image viewer should be more than pleased with the wide variety of options offered by JPEGView.
